6.5: The Challenges and Joy of Fostering Rescue Animals
If youre a no-kill animal shelter or an animal rescue group and youve got more animals than kennels to keep them in, or youve got dogs or cats with health or behavioral problems that need sorting out to render the animals adoptable, what are you going to do Youre going to call an animal fosterer like Rena Curtis to take that animal in, de-traumatize it, teach it some manners, and get its health problems sorted out so it can go a-courtin its forever people. Tune in as we discuss this hard, sometimes frightening, occasionally heart-wrenching, but ultimately satisfying work, why there are so many more dogs and cats than homes to put them in, and what we can do to change that situation.
Pax loves to rearrange my kitchen cabinets. Oh well. Let the shenanigans begin!
Good morning, afternoon or evening! Happy Monday to you all!

It was a rough night until daylight. Winds maybe stopped around 400 or 500 in the morning. At daylight, I made my way outside to check on all of our outside cats. Their cat houses were turned over, and their boxes were out in the yard. All cats, inside and outside, were in distress.
I began counting tails and found everyone was accounted for. Everyone was traumatized, especially when the generator was pulled out and turned on.
20 days is basically three weeks with no power/internet. We made it through with no major disasters. All cats were safe,

Now, Skittle and Cutie usually sleep in their cat tree, which is in front of the window. This night, Skittle had received a new scratcher pad, and Cutie had taken over a box near the door. Fortunately, they were not in the cat tree as it was destroyed by the fallen real tree. The window was shattered and glass was everywhere. If they had been in the cat tree, they would have been injured.
We were more concerned for our cats than all the thousands of dollars worth of computer and networking equipment in that room. We scooped up the cats and moved them to secure-ish areas. The electronics would come secondary.
Skittle and Cutie were relocated to the TV Room with Rose and Pong. to hopefully be secure enough to ride out the hurricane winds/tornadoes..

While outside on the back porch, I noticed the winds were much stronger than normal. I then began to hear cracking/popping noises in the darkness beyond my flashlight. Having heard this sound before, I knew there were trees snapping. I immediately returned inside.
I began rounding up the cats that were not already in the master bedroom (in distress) and attempted to get them secure.
Minutes later, there was a large thud which shook the house. My husband, who was in the TV Room comforting two other special needs cats was already in the hallway when I got there.
We both opened the door to the office to find a massive tree in the middle of the room. Wind was whipping around and the rain was coming into the room. Skittle and Cutie were were uninjured, and we immediately rescued them from the room.
Trying to catch up...
So, yeah, it was 20 days offline with no power or internet. Some of my neighbors still have now power due to damaged homes and private poles/weather heads that an electrician is required.
Updating on the cats who have weathered the storm: Skittle (handicapped with one eye and limited vision) and Cutie (11 years old) were in the office during the hurricane. They stay in the office with a cat tree and a view of the outside front yard through the large window. I had just checked on them at about 3:00 AM and they were fine. The power had just gone offline which always happens during hurricanes/storms.
I stepped out on the back porch to kinda get a feel for what was going on. Our hurricane issues are usually just a little wind and some small amounts of rain. That night, it was not anywhere near our usual "bad weather."
To be continued...
Pax is snoozing her Sunday night away.
